Four Charlotte-region charter schools are going against its parent company's, Flordia-based Charter Schools USA, desire to open with in-person learning amind the COVID-19 public health crisis.
Instead, the local charter school board of Cabarrus, Iredell, Langree and Concord Lake STEAM will not start the year with in-person instruction and instead provide remote learning to its student population, WFAE reported on Aug. 1.
"I think the best thing to do is to give your parents and kids options," consultant Leah Dellicarpini, chief of strategy for Florida-based LaunchED Solutions, said at the emergency meetings, WFAE reported.
Board members agreed while it's best for charter school students to learn in the classroom, circumstances are different during the coronavirus pandemic.
"I don’t think anyone on this board would disagree that the best experience for a student is in-class learning. I don’t think any of us disagree with that," board member Patrick Griffin, parent and health care professional, said during the meeting, WFAE reported. "But we’re in the middle of a pandemic."
