Sen. Vickie Sawyer (R-Iredell) explained the reasons for the delay in the progress of the Cornelius Road interchange for the I77 project.
The Republican lawmaker's outreach came after receiving information related to the state Department of Public Transportation project.
Sawyer said the I-77 project in her Oct. 20 Facebook post would be delayed until at least 2028.
"Construction of this project was initially scheduled to begin in FY 2025; however, as a result of the recent STIP amendments required to address the Department's financial situation, start of construction has been delayed until FY 2028," the DOT told Sawyer, according to her Facebook post.
The Transportation Department said in the post that early-stage engineering work had started but was "suspended approximately a year ago."
The department said that since the project was still being developed, there are few details available.
"Given the current project delivery schedule, there are also no immediate plans to resume preliminary engineering work," the department said, according to Sawyer's Facebook post.
