Cornelius Police Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 21.
Cornelius Police are investigating a fraud that occurred when a victim allowed a stranger to use their cellphone to make an emergency call. The suspect made a phone call then asked to send a text message using the victim’s cellphone. Instead of sending a text message, the suspect entered the victim’s cash app and money was transferred from the victim’s cash app to an account held by the suspect.
We are warning the community to please not lend your phone to those you do not know. We also recommend that you go into the settings on your phone and add a passcode to your cash apps. Do not let your kindheartedness be taken advantage of.
