TOWN OF DAVIDSON: To Celebrate Arbor Day Saturday, March 19

Treeplanting

Town of Davidson issued the following announcement on Mar. 3.

Davidson residents are invited to celebrate Arbor Day on Saturday, March 19 at Plum Creek Park (18928 Bartlette Creek Drive). There will be a brief ceremony at 9:00 a.m. followed by a tree planting along the adjacent greenway. If you are interested in participating in our tree planting event, please contact the Davidson Lands Conservancy at dlc@davidsonlands.org. The annual Arbor Day celebration encourages individuals and groups to plant and care for trees

The Town of Davidson was recently recognized as a 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. This is the twelfth year Davidson has been awarded this designation. Community volunteers, the town’s Livability Advisory Board, Trees Davidson, a program of the Davidson Lands Conservancy, and town staff all made contributions toward this achievement.

“Observing Arbor day as a community is one of the requirements of maintaining our Tree City USA designation. I am happy to support the town’s commitment to stewardship of the tree canopy through maintaining the trees we have and working to plant more trees for our future,” said Gary Thacker, Town of Davidson Arborist. “Thanks to all who share a love for Davidson’s trees and celebrate trees as an important part of the town.”

Accomplishments

In the past year Davidson hired Gary Thacker as the town arborist to assist residents and developers in making good decisions regarding the town’s treasured tree canopy. Gary is an International Society of Arborists Certified Arborist, a Certified Tree Safety Professional, and a Tree-Risk-Assessment-Qualified arborist with 22 years’ experience in the care and maintenance of trees. Having a full-time arborist in a small town like Davidson shows the community’s dedication to keeping the town beautiful for generations to come. The past year saw several successes due to the collaborative effort of dedicated community members, town staff, and local nonprofit organizations. A large focus for the town last year was to slow tree canopy loss and promote conservation through educational programs.
