TOWN OF TROUTMAN: Hiring For Public Works Technician Position

Position Objectives:

An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the operation, maintenance, and repair of buildings, grounds, streets and sidewalks, street signs, vehicles, equipment, water distribution system, wastewater collection system, and other public facilities and areas. Work also involves collecting yard waste and leaves, landscape maintenance, and related work.

Work involves operating light and medium construction equipment and a variety of power and hand tools. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood-borne pathogens. Employees are also subject to on-call and call-back work. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines; performs taps; repairs leaks; installs lines; cleans and maintains sewer lines and manholes; smokes sewer lines to check for cracks and connections; maintains sewer pump stations and outfall areas.
  • Operates a variety of light and medium equipment such as a dump truck, tamper, trencher, chainsaw, mower, backpack blower, weed eater, equipment lifts, and other related equipment.
  • Makes rounds to inspect pump stations; cleans, deodorizes, and de-greases pump stations; diagnoses and troubleshoots issues that arise; participates in plumbing and mechanical repairs; performs annual sewer line jetting; performs sewer right-of-way inspections.
  • Responds to citizen concerns about water quality; performs water quality sampling and reporting, assuring compliance with state standards; performs daily reading of water supply meters and logs water lost; reads meters monthly; locates and sets meters; approves installation of meters by contractors; orders and maintains parts for a variety of meter sets; performs backflow testing and certification; performs 811 locates of water and sewer lines; serves as ORCforCross Connection/Backflowandback-upORCforthewaterdistributionandwastewatercollectionsystems.
  • Participatesincoldpatchandasphaltrepairtostreets; rakes and smooths asphalt; participates in erection, maintenance, and repair of street signs and painting street markings.
  • Participates in mowing, edging, mulching, planting, seeding, fertilizing, irrigating, and other landscape maintenance tasks; plants and maintains flowerbeds; participates in clearing right of ways and leaf and limb removal; removes fallen limbs from streets; applies pesticides/herbicides.
  • Provides traffic flagging and control and ensures a safe work zone when working around traffic.
  • Performs general and preventive maintenance on Town vehicles and on a variety of equipment; makes minor repairs; tracks scheduled maintenance; keeps vehicles clean.
  • Prepares records and reports of work activities.
  • Performs start-up, set up and clean up responsibilities for Town festivals and parades; decorates for various holidays.
