Town of Davidson issued the following announcement on June 7.
The Ada Jenkins Center, together with sponsors the Town of Davidson, Atrium Health, the Brenda H. Tapia Family Foundation, Davidson College, WCNC, GIFT, Lowe’s, and MSC, invites the community to celebrate its second annual Juneteenth gathering on June 18, 2022 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Juneteenth, a holiday originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865 and now recognized in North Carolina and forty-three other states, celebrates the emancipation of African Americans.
The free celebration and family fun day, located at the Ada Jenkins Center at 212 Gamble Street, will include slam poetry, performances, a keynote address, music, dancing, shopping, food trucks, and more! Thanks to event sponsors, the first 500 people to check in at the Welcome Tent will receive a complimentary lunch.
Town of Davidson Housing and Equity Director Eugene Bradley notes “Juneteenth is an important celebration for our community – what many consider to be a true Independence Day! We’re so glad folks in Davidson can gather together for this great event and hope to see many familiar and new faces on this day of reflection and fun!”
