TOWN OF CORNELIUS: Westmoreland Road Closure Rescheduled

Town of Cornelius issued the following announcement on Oct. 17.

Westmoreland Road will be closed between HWY 21 and West Catawba Avenue on October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. as J.D. Goodrum installs a mid-block crosswalk with HAWK signal lights.

The new crosswalk will serve as a connection between Phase I and Phase II of McDowell Creek Greenway. Once constructed, the existing crosswalk at Lake Pines Drive will be removed.

Local traffic will have unrestricted access to the Westmoreland Athletic Complex and nearby neighborhoods and businesses.

HAWK (High-intensity Activated crossWalK) signals are activated by pedestrians when they need to cross. The signal safely slows and then stops traffic, giving pedestrians an unobstructed opportunity to cross the street. Once the roadway is clear, the signal deactivates, and motorists are able to resume their travels.

The HAWK signal on Westmoreland Road will also include a pedestrian refuge in the median.

This is one of many crosswalk improvements that the Town of Cornelius is making to ensure safer streets for all of our residents. The improvements are made in concert with the Town's Heads Up Cornelius safety campaign which actively engages residents in order to disseminate safety guidance and inform pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists of local and state laws.
