Town of Huntersville Fire Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 28.

Please be safe tonight as you celebrate the arrival of 2023. It’s been a fantastic, growing, busy 2022 for us! Here are some safety tips below to help you stay safe tonite.

* Plan your travel options ahead of time, arrange for a designated driver, a hotel stay, car service (Lyft, Uber), and/or public transportation. DO NOT drive drunk - we do not want to respond to a tragedy because you made an irresponsible decision.

*  Fireworks. As you celebrate, avoid using fire works that leave the ground. If you decide to use fireworks, do not discard them in the normal trash, place them in a metal bucket full of water until tomorrow or even Monday.

*  Firearms. Avoid firearms tonite; especially if you’ve been drinking.  Remember, what you shoot up; always comes back down.

*  Loud Noises. Please respect our local combat veterans - loud noises can add stress to our local, selfless super heroes. Please also think about the young kiddos going to be early and the pets out there that may run away when scared by the loud celebrations.

*  Christmas Tree - do you still have a real Christmas tree inside your home? If so, you’re most likely pushing the safety envelope. Remember a dry Christmas is pure fuel for a fire! Consider recycling that tree at a Mecklenburg County Government Recycling center - we have one here in Huntersville!

We just want you to be safe, respectful of neighbors and we don’t want to meet you in person at an emergency scene!

Have a safe, fun evening and remember - we’re on duty if you need us, just call us - we’ll be there!
