HPD Chief Bence Hoyle to Retire After 37 Years of Law Enforcement Service | TOWN OF HUNTERSVILLE: (huntersville.org)
Town of Huntersville issued the following announcement on March 7.
“As you know I am reluctant to retire, but I am sure, after 37 years, it is time.” Chief Bence Hoyle
Huntersville Town Manager Anthony Roberts announced today that Police Chief Bence Hoyle will retire on June 1, 2023, from the Huntersville Police Department. Of his 37 years in law enforcement, nearly two decades have been spent at the Huntersville Police Department. Upon Hoyle’s retirement, Major Barry Graham will be promoted to Chief.
One of the many priorities of Chief Hoyle was to prepare the leadership of the department to step up to the next level of service in the organization.
“We have accomplished a lot,” said Hoyle in his retirement notice, “but most importantly, I was asked to create a succession plan to make sure we are growing our own leaders that are committed to Huntersville. These are very seasoned professionals who have spent most of their careers right here in Huntersville. We have a deep bench for future Chiefs, Majors, Captains, and all positions in between who understand the concept of building from within. The culture is strong, and our command staff and supervisors get the credit for that.”
Barry Graham was hired as a Patrol Officer for Huntersville in 1997 after serving in Biltmore Forest, North Carolina. He obtained his associate degree from Central Piedmont Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University. Graham is a graduate of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations, Police Executives Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Policing, and the FBI’s National Academy. He has served Huntersville as a Patrol Officer, School Resource Officer, Detective, Crime Prevention/Recruitment Sergeant, Administrative Lieutenant and Internal Affairs, and Bureau Commander/Captain. Since 2016, Graham has served as Major and has managed the day-to-day operations of the department and the annual budget process.
“I am happy to announce that I will be promoting Barry Graham to be the next Huntersville Police Chief effective June 1, 2023,” said Roberts. “He has the knowledge and support within the Huntersville Police Department and will provide much-needed continuity within the organization, making him the obvious choice as our next Chief.”
