Moms for Liberty has endorsed Sherry Koontz in her race for a seat on the Davidson County Board of Education. Early voting will take place from October 17 to November 2 for the November 5 general election.
According to a post on her personal Facebook page, if elected to the Davidson County Board of Education, Koontz will work to ensure that teachers receive necessary funding, improve transparency and communication, and protect children from excessive government interventions.
Last year, Koontz was named Davidson County Senior Services Volunteer of the Year for her work with seniors. The Dispatch's Jill Ross-Daines reported that Koontz had begun volunteering with Meals on Wheels 22 years ago as a way of giving back to an organization that had been a lifeline for her family growing up in poverty.
In addition to delivering food, beginning four years ago, Koontz has also organized a group of volunteers to put together Christmas gift bags filled with items like personal hygiene products, snacks, and activities for every senior who is part of the Meals on Wheels program.
Koontz served for 15 years in the U.S. Army as a light wheeled vehicle mechanic. She and her husband of 37 years, Alan, co-own Carolina Pondscapes and are parents and grandparents. All four of their children have attended Ledford High School, where Koontz has been active for 15 years, including as a volunteer.
More recently, Koontz has used her personal Facebook page to help organize volunteers to provide and transport aid, food, and supplies to hurricane victims in western North Carolina.
Per the Davidson County Schools Board of Education manual, the Board comprises five members. Terms are four years and staggered so that two or three members are elected every two years. Elections are nonpartisan.
Moms for Liberty is a parental-rights-in-education advocacy group founded by Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, two former school board members. According to their website, "Moms for Liberty is dedicated to fighting for the survival of America by unifying, educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government."
