Sen. Vickie Sawyer (R-Mooresville) filed legislation to help further the efforts of cancer research in North Carolina, according to a news release she posted to Medium on May 15.

The proposal calls for many actions such as working with epidemiologists to help lead an investigation and creating a Cancer Cluster Subcommittee made up of experts from related industries, including epidemiologists and environmental health scientists.

"This is a top priority for me as a legislator and I’m committed to finding answers for my constituents and the citizens of North Carolina," she said in a news statement posted to Medium. "This bill is a major step forward in figuring out what is causing the elevated levels of specific cancers not just in Iredell County, but across the State. My district and the surrounding areas are depending on their Government officials to dig deeper into what is causing higher rates of cancers like Thyroid and Ocular Melanoma."

According to her Facebook page, Sawyer said that while the priorities of both parties have changed in response to COVID-19, she is still committed to working toward finding answers as to why certain areas of North Carolina have a higher incidence of cancer.

"I have not lost sight of my other top priorities as an elected official," she posted on Facebook.
